Since its inception, Noctilux has been synonymous with moody darkness and complex bass frequencies. Despite having roots firmly planted in bass, Noctilux has continued to grow their limbs and unfurl into a labyrinth of rhythmic patterns and multifaceted genres. Noctilux releases continue to be branded by mood, running through the spectrum of electronic music that is governed by quality rather than generic genre classification.
NCT020, the Hollow Voices EP, continues the sonic tradition into 2019. Produced by Kiytek, Hollow Voices, is Kiytek’s fifth effort on the Noctilux imprint, and is a very fitting release to push the Noctilux sound firmly into the new year.
Assigning genre to a sound as diverse as Kiytek’s is almost as much of an affront to his musical diversity as it is impossible to pigeonhole. Based in Edmonton, Kiytek has been known to champion both UK-style dubstep as well as techno, often finding ways to incorporate both into a single set.
On the four tracks of Hollow Voices, Kiytek is not governed by a singular genre, he does however showcase a singular style all his own.
The first track, “Best Intentions,” is the perfect melodic introduction of what is to come and sets the tone of Hollow Voices. The track is textured and fresh, creating visions of sunrise sets at summer festivals.
“Hollow Voices,” the namesake of the EP is next. At first glance the hints of bass lead the listener to the belief this EP will be a melodic journey best suited for mellow times. Close to the two-minute mark, the bass kicks off, and “Hollow Voices” becomes a proper dancefloor heater suitable for primetime club play.
“Oceans Between” find the vibe heading back to the mellow side of the aural spectrum, but again, Kiytek teases until the bass drops in and we realize we are immersed in another danceable rhythm.
Ending off with the track “Passengers,” mellow bleeps and bloops direct the listener down a sonic pathway of more melody. Eventually the track gives way to an atmospheric bass expedition that gently fades out, wrapping up the Hollow Voices EP in a perfect manner. “Passengers” summarizes impeccably what Kiytek is all about, and shows us that Edmonton may have more to offer the world of dance music than originally thought.
